Sports are usually intended for human competition. Whether it’s a friendly game of touch football with your neighbors, high-level competitive boxing matches, or even the ultimate battle between man and machine at the Olympic Games, sports involve using our bodies in a way that requires physical strength, agility, speed and mental focus. As you may imagine, there are many different sports. Some common sports include track and field, ice hockey, bowling, gymnastics, swimming, hockey, football, rugby, softball, basketball, gymnastics and especially sports related to medicine or physical therapy. All of these types of sports are vigorous physical activity.
Even though many of us enjoy participating in recreational and other non-physical activities throughout the week and throughout our lives, our participation in sports can have serious physical and/or psychological health consequences. For example, excessive weight lifting can lead to eventual musculoskeletal issues and even bone and joint conditions as we age. Similarly, excessive involvement in athletics can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Ingestion of too much alcohol can also have devastating consequences, leading to liver and kidney problems, especially if it’s in excess of the recommended daily intake.
What about recreational activities? In elementary school, students often engage in various types of team sports, including varsity athletics. Our middle schools and high schools play a variety of athletic events, some requiring repetitive jumping or throwing actions. Our students also engage in endurance events, such as running or walking. There are numerous physical and motor skills activities that students participate in during the school year. For example, many middle schools are involved in band activities, cheerleading, tennis, field hockey, soccer, basketball, track and field, and track and field events that require great coordination and physical mastery.
As a result, we have children who are not developing the cognitive and emotional capabilities needed for peak childhood performance. Not only is the physical fitness level decreasing, the mental skills necessary for peak childhood performance are decreasing as well. Most sports professionals agree that physical fitness should be at a level where the body can withstand intense activity over an extended period of time. Yet, recreational sports, such as ice skating and snowboarding, require that the person use every part of the body – the heart, the lungs, the muscles, and the mind – in a single movement. Most recreational activities don’t allow that. In fact, there is considerable research that indicates that most injuries that occur in sports – from minor sprains and strains to torn ligaments and muscles – occur when the athlete is unable to exert enough effort to produce a marked reduction in the force with which they collide with the object.
It’s also been demonstrated that children who engage in recreational sports are more likely to participate in athletic activity as adults. This may be due to the social benefits of team sports, or to the development of skills that children learn through athletics. Most recreational sports teach players how to think quickly, how to control their emotions, and how to make good decisions under pressure. While some of these skills may be taught conventionally through coaching, many must be learned in real world scenarios. This means that the child will probably spend quite a bit of their life engaged in these activities, so it’s important that the right mental makeup is achieved.
In addition, many physical activities, such as wrestling or basketball, do not require a lot of skill. As a result, those who lack the requisite motor skills and physical abilities, especially in the kicking, throwing, and blocking areas of a sport like basketball, may be at a disadvantage when they enter sports that require true competition. In a sport like soccer, for example, the obvious advantages to a player are speed and strength. And it’s not uncommon for non-athletes to make great soccer players simply by working on their ball control and shooting techniques. Sports such as bowling can teach proper lane positions, ball handling, and other important elements of the game, but the most common skill required for bowling is keeping one’s feet under the bowling ball at all times during a game.
These are just a few examples of why it’s important to encourage young people to engage in physical sports. Not only can young people learn valuable skills and develop healthy habits that they will use throughout life, but they’ll be socially more developed individuals who can be counted on in a crisis. Some young people may shy away from sports because of this concern. The truth is that sports can be an incredible source of self-fulfillment in almost any person, and there’s simply no reason why a young person should avoid them. If a parent wants their child to excel in sports, then it’s a parent’s responsibility to make sure that the child does whatever it takes to become good at sports. Fortunately, there are a plethora of sports and fitness activities available for kids of all ages that parents can choose from in order to ensure that their child develops a love for sports and a strong aptitude for sportsmanship.
